Great Big Green Week, the UK’s largest celebration of nature and call for action on climate change, returns this June.
Great Big Green Week, the UK’s largest celebration of nature and call for action on climate change, returns this June. Bedford Borough Council is excited to announce a lineup of events on Saturday 15 June, hosted by The Higgins Bedford, Panacea Museum, and John Bunyan Museum. The programme aims to raise awareness about environmental conservation and inspire residents to take action to protect our natural world.
Now in its fourth year, Great Big Green Week takes place from Saturday 8 to Sunday 16 June. Residents are encouraged to visit various locations across Bedford Borough to participate in a range of eco-friendly activities.
On Saturday 15 June:
At The Higgins Bedford, visitors can unleash their creativity through willow weaving and learn the art of mending with the Mend-Up Crew. Additionally, The Good Life Garden will be creating mini planters and bird feeders using household recyclables and there will also be a Crafternoon session for families with local artist Marisa Straccia. The Higgins Garden Volunteers will also be running their popular plant stall with some real bargains, all proceeds will go to The Higgins Garden Project.
Meanwhile, John Bunyan Museum invites attendees to engage in a felt flower workshop, join the community garden planting, and craft inspired natural sculptures. Families can also enjoy a camouflage materials trail around the garden, fostering an appreciation for nature's wonders.
At Panacea Museum, visitors can participate in a Craft Stash Swap, promoting sustainable practices and reducing waste by exchanging crafting materials.
These events have been planned by The Higgins Bedford, Panacea Museum, and John Bunyan Museum, demonstrating their commitment to environmental education and community engagement. Events at The Higgins Bedford are supported using public funding by Arts Council England (ACE).
Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Great Big Green Week events, stating, “These activities offer residents of all ages the opportunity to connect with nature and explore sustainable practices right here in Bedford. By coming together as a community, we can make a meaningful impact in safeguarding our environment for future generations.”
Other events coordinated by Bedford Borough Council for Great Big Green Week include Yoga and Wellbeing in the Park, a mindful walk and a guided tour along the river, and community gardening sessions at Addison Howard Park, Kempston and Bunyan Sports and Fitness Centre.
Bedford Borough Libraries are planning community litter picks from Bromham and Wootton libraries, a plant swap at Putnoe Library, free bicycle servicing at Bedford Central Library, and a craft session with the Bedford Borough Council Air Quality Engagement Officer at Kempston Library.
